Internet of Things (IoT) is a concept that we often encounter these days and will hear even more in the future.
This concept, which was used for the first time in a presentation prepared by Kevin Ashton for a company in 1999, after that it has reached a broader vision with the developing technology .
So, What is the Internet of Things?
The Internet of Things is defined as “a worldwide wide-ranging network of uniquely addressable objects and the interaction of objects on this network with a specific protocol”. Additionally, this concept is as a system of devices that use various communication protocols to communicate and connect with each other to share information and create a smart network.
The camera system, installed in 1991 in order to see the coffee machine made by 15 academicians at Cambridge University, was a stimulating application when understood Considering the technological advances of that day. The system was to send the image of the coffee machine to computer screens three times a minute and as such was used until 2001. It was boht online and in real time , and as such it is considered to be the first example of the “Internet of Things” concept .
In 1999, Kevin Ashton listed the benefits of the Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) technology application for Procter and Gamble and suggested its use. The system recommended by him was a global system standard based on radio waves and sensors that introduced the concept of “Internet of things”.
What is the Current Situation?
According to the researches, it is estimated that currently 30-40 billion devices are connected to the internet and this figure is expected to increase to 75 billion devices by 2025. The same research also indicates that the rate of the interconnected devices per capita in the world in 2020 is 3.96, the rate is estimated to have increased to 9.27 by 2025. Additionally, it is predicted that the information traffic generated by 20 typical household appliances in 2025 will be higher than all the internet traffic produced in 2020
Which devices are connecting each other?
When it comes to the Internet of Things, it is wrong to understand it only as the devices being connected to the Internet. It is also within the IoT concept that RFID-like sensors and identifiers produce information with some devices.
When the objects get equipped with sensors and electronic circuits, they acquire the skills to contact people and to update their status information. With the development of mobile networks and the Internet, it became easier for these objects to communicate with people, and people had the chance to observe and control them from anywhere and anytime.
Moreover, switching to IPv6 protocol has made a significant improvement as it eliminated an important obstacle to prevent IP conflicts.
Besides all its benefits, IoT can also be a source of problems.. The fact that we record our lives online increases the amount of data, which is difficult and complex to be analyzed and processed. Furthermore, the confidentiality and security of these emerging data will be an important issue.
In the coming years, we will experience a period in which interaction and the Internet will enter almost every object and different objects will act for common purposes. Meanwhile, All of us will witness how physiologically and psychologically people will respond to this change.
